Georgia, having endured nearly seventy years under Soviet rule, boasts a landscape dotted with buildings and monuments showcasing distinctive Soviet architecture. Cities like Tbilisi, Rustavi, Tskaltubo, Chiatura, Kutaisi, Gori and Zugdidi are famous for Soviet style buildings.

Tbilisi is famous for Art Nouveau buildings as well as for brutalist apartment buildings, factories, and monuments that stand as symbols of Soviet period. While traversing the city you will see Soviet-style apartment buildings and can visit notable landmarks such as the Chronicles of Georgia, the former museum of archaeology and the Bolshevik secret printing press. Left without occupants after the Soviet Union's collapse, former Soviet sanatoriums have been reclaimed by time and nature, offering a unique glimpse into the passage of history. One of these sanatoriums in Tskaltubo was bought and restored by investors and it is possible to comfortably stay there overnight. Former Naval sanatorium is nowadays called Tskaltubo Spa resort and features huge garden with a nice water pool. 

 

Chiatura, a former Soviet mining town nestled amidst breathtaking mountains, offers awe-inspiring landscapes. Its subtropical climate paints the town with lush, green hills. Explore the unique ropeways and Soviet-style mining infrastructure that define Chiatura's charm.

 

 

Enguri hydropower station

 

The Enguri hydropower station near Zugdidi stands as an iconic example of Soviet architecture. Built in the 1970s, this hydro power station boasts one of the world's highest dome-shaped dams, leaving a lasting imprint on Georgia's landscape.

Enguri hydropower station has numerous tunnels inside which are beneficial for electricity generation and safe management of the whole system. Nowadays it is possible to enter the hydropower station and enjoy the views of the dam, the lake and enter tunnels along with the local guide.
